Historical Museum of The Hague: Saturday and Sunday at 14:00 there will be special themed guided tours (30 minutes) on the Stadhouders and the De Witt Brothers. The guided tours and lectures are included in the museum entry ticket. Entry to the museum is free for Museum Card holders.

Haags Historisch Museum and Museum Bredius

The historian Marcel Nonhebel of Vrienden van de Witt (friends of De Witt), will give a lecture entitled (in Dutch) Waartoe de Acte van Seclusie? Nooit meer een Oranje als stadhouder aanstellen’ (what is the purpose of the Act of Seclusion? Never again appoint an Orange as Stadhouder) at 15:15 on Sunday 12 August in the Historical Museum of The Hague. If you have a Museum Card, the entry is free. The Hague’s Baroque Orchestra, the New Dutch Academy, will give an exclusive lecture (in Dutch) at 15:00 on Saturday 11 August in the Bredius Museum. This is an 18thcentury mansion at Lange Vijverberg 14. Take a seat among Abraham Bredius’ private collection of paintings by Jan Steen and Rembrandt. Director Simon Murphy will deliver the lecture entitled ‘Den Haag, Internationale Muziekstad in de 18e eeuw’ (The Hague: international city of music in the 18thcentury). His lecture includes interesting information on Francesco Zappa, the lead cellist of Prince William V. Tickets for the lecture are € 6 and include entry to the museum. The Museum Card is not valid for this event. Reservations are recommended via info@newdutchacademy.nl.

 

Museum Bredius is open to the public on Saturday 11 August from 11:00 to 15:00 and on Sunday 12 August from 11:00 to 17:00. Entry is € 6 and is free for Museum Card holders. Did you know that Abraham Bredius was the director of the Mauritshuis for 10 years?

Willem V was the last Stadhouder and was the father of King William I. He loved art more than he did ruling. He opened the first public museum in the Netherlands, the Prince William V Gallery, next to the Prison Gate. His collection forms the basic collection of the Mauritshuis.

TIP Experience the sites where these famous paintings in The Hague were painted with the Buitenmuseum (outdoor museum).

Historic guided walking tour of the city

Saturday and Sunday: walking tour through the old ‘Die Haghe’ at 12:45 and 14:45. Duration 1 hour. The city of The Hague grew from a village that belonged to the count’s castle on the Binnenhof. Register with the guide next to the Haringkar (herring stand) in front of the Binnenhof. Costs € 5 p.p., children aged 6-12 years € 2.50, max. 15 persons.

Tourist Tram

Get on at different points e.g. Central Station, Kneuterdijk

Saturday and Sunday unlimited travel with a day pass in the 60 year old Haagse Tram between the City and Scheveningen. Day pass € 15, children aged 4 to 12 years € 5.

Sunday 12 August Sail like a prince from the city to the beach on the Koninginnegracht canal. Boat departs at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, board at Central Station. Boat departs from the beach to the city at 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00, board at the Haringkade (at the Vijzelstraat). Adults € 10, children aged 3 to 11 years € 6, and children aged 0 to 2 years free. The Willemsvaart canal boat company is named after King William I who had the Koninginnegracht canal dug.

Buitenmuseum

A walking tour, ‘Ontmoet wereldberoemde schilders’ (meet world famous artists) will be held at 12:30 and 14:30 on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12. The Buitenmuseum – the outdoor museum – is an artistic part of the area around the Dunne Bierkade road. World famous artists lived and worked here. Their paintings hang in several museums including the Prince William V Gallery, the Mauritshuis and Haags Historisch Museum, the Historical Museum of The Hague. The one hour walk costs € 9 for adults and € 6 for children. Tickets must be reserved through 070 – 3220487. PS: Meet a former resident of the area on Sunday 12 August.

 

One of the leading scientists of the 17thcentury, Christiaan Huygens, will also be at the Hollands Historisch Festijn. His father, Constantijn Huygens, was a famous advisor to the House of Orange. Their country house, Hofwijck aan de Vliet in Voorburg, is open to the public. It was designed by Christiaan Huygens to depict the perfect shape of the body with the house as the head.
